Filming the Music Video - Day 1

DAY 1

We decided to film the last cuts of the music video first as it is the longest bit to film. We had the main singer and an actor to play the abusive boyfriend. During the filming we created emotion for both people in the shot. The boyfriend was made to look like he regrets everything he did to her and is trying to reach out to her but she has already let go. The main singer was made to look angry about what her boyfriend did but her outfit and the way she sings the song was made to show her being set free from him.

Production Meeting 4

Production Meeting 4

In our fourth production meeting we talk about scheduling our last filming session. We decided that after looking through our footage for our rough cut we realised we have to re-film the footage that we used as there were some bits that made the video look messy. We the discussed about finalising our video ideas and final settings for our video. We also touched upon how we would edit the rest of the video, and that we need to use a larger variety of shots. We also discussed filming the last bit at the park as we have not yet filmed it so we discussed the areas of the park that we will film in and the specific type of shots that we will use.

Production Meeting 3

Production Meeting 3

During this meeting we discussed what we need to film next. We decided that we needed to do some filming in the park. We also discussed any precautions we have to take to make sure the singer isn't too cold, so we confirmed details about what the singer should ware to make sure she is comfortable and warm.

We also talked about the equipment we would have to use - We will need a dolly to do a tracking shot of the singer walking across a bridge.

We discussed how the location that we are filming in next will make our singer look. We want her to look lonely but powerful.

Production Meeting 2

Production Meeting 2

In our second production meeting we decided that we would change what we filmed because the male actor could not make the filming meetings. We talked about showing the abusive relationship that she was in by using close up shots of bruises on the girls skin. We then decided on the date of our next filming meeting and decided on details and different shots for the re-filming.

Storyboard & Animatic

Storyboard

It is quite difficult to create a storyboard as i know that there may be changes that i want to make to the final piece as there will be extra footage that i would like to use that is not in the storyboard. There are a few images in the storyboard that will be repeated when i create the Animatic for this storyboard, that's why in the image below you can see "3 again" written on the sheet.

Audience Research

Audience Research

Audience research is an important aspect of our planning for our music video. Gathering other peoples ideas has a great impact as it helps our group to come up with different, more creative ideas for our music video.
We did a number of different activities to collect ideas and get different perspectives on our song.

Firstly, we played our song to our class and they answered four questions on a slip of paper.

The questions were:

1- What five words do you think of when you hear this song?
2- What do you imagine the singer of this song looks like?
3- What colour do you think of when you hear this song?
4- What kind of scene do you imagine seeing?

Below is a summary of some of the words they wrote down.

We then asked the girls in our class what they though of our idea for the music video, because they fit in the target audience, here are some of the quotes:

- "i like the idea about it because it shows that girls can do what they want to do, however she might feel guilty at the end because she killed her boyfriend." - Gemma

- "An interesting amplification of a love song - a unique take on the stereotypical conventions seen in "love" songs or in this case "not quite love" songs." - Megan

- "a bit messed up, a cool idea." - Victoria

"i like the fact that the idea for this music video incorporates the lyrics but doesn't mirror it exactly the same, shows another perspective." - Chloe

"Out Loud" - Gabbie Hanna

Expressing the pain that she went through.

Gabbi Hanna - Copy of Lyrics

"Out Loud"

(Say what you mean out loud)

I still taste your presence
Once sweet but it turned sour
Tried to shake your indifference
But it's too late now

I hear you in the quiet
I see you when I'm in the dark
You just couldn't fight for this
But it's not your fault

Say what you mean out loud
Drowning in silence when I'm lost in the crowd
'Cause every sweet thing you never speak
It's deafening, never knowin' what could be
Wish I could show you how
But you're just a ghost now

Your laughter haunts me
Like a ringing in my ear
You left me long ago,
You're still everywhere

I reach out for you
I'm desperate for your warmth
Can you tell me where we went wrong?
At least tell me just to move on

Say what you mean out loud
Drowning in silence when I'm lost in the crowd
'Cause every sweet thing you never speak
It's deafening, never knowin' what could be
Wish I could show you how
But you're just a ghost now

You're just a ghost now
But you're just a ghost, ghost now
You're just a ghost, ghost now, now
But you're just a—

It's time to let it go
You left me all alone
I wanna feel your heartbeat
But it doesn't beat for me no more, no

It's time to let it go
You left me all alone
It's holdin' me down,
It's burnin' me out
I'm beggin' for sound
But I can't bring you back now

Say what you mean out loud
Drowning in silence when I'm lost in the crowd
'Cause every sweet thing you never speak
It's deafening, never knowin' what could be
Wish I could show you how
But you're just a ghost now

You're just a ghost now
(it's time to let it go)
But you're just a ghost, ghost now
(you left me all alone)
You're just a ghost now, now
(it's time to let it go)
But you're just a ghost now

Copyright/ Gaining Permission

Gaining Permission

The issue of copy right is very important in the music industry. These laws protect an artist and their music. Other people cannot gain profit without permission from the artist. This also means that if someone uses an artists music without first gaining permission, for example to put on Youtube, their content can be demonised or even taken down.

As a result of the copyright law, i have emailed Gabbie Hanna to gain permission  to use her music for our coursework.

Choosing the track

Choosing the track

We chose to film our own version of the music video for the song by Gabbie Hanna "Out Loud". Gabbie is a popular american YouTuber. She is 26 years old and has over 5 million subscribers.

Me and my partner, Diana, thought that her song would be the best choice for us as we are both familiar with the artist and we are both big fans of her youtube videos. The song is emotional and relatable for most teenage girls, so it is easy for us to come up with some emotional heartbreaking ideas for our video. Gabbie's song could be interpreted very differently if you havn't watched the video. You would think that this song is about the boy leaving the girl, but having watched the video you find out that the boy actually dies. Our first thoughts were to go with what Gabbie was showing in her video but later on we decided to completely twist the lyrics.

The person that we chose to be our main singer in our video is, Megan Haxell, she is the perfect person to act as "Gabbie", because Megan has a background in singing and acting. This is useful to us as she would be able to portray the feelings that the singer is feeling easily and make it clear for the viewers too.

Music Video Added Value

Music Video Added Value

Music videos can often ‘add value’ to songs
For both of these songs it's the video
that ensured that the song was a hit record.

Nothing Compares to U was a minor hit for
Prince but Sinead O’Connor’s version has
proven to be a career defining release mainly
due to the video.

"Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and
composed by Prince for one of his side projects. It was made famous by an Irish recording artist
Sinéad O'Connor, this song became a worldwide hit in 1990. The music video and it's lyrics explore deep feelings of longing. Directed by John Maybury, the video consists mostly of a close-up on Sinéad O'Connor's face and her different stages of sadness and even anger as she  sings the
lyrics; the rest consists of her walking through an area of Paris at the end of the video, two tears roll down her face, one on
each cheek.

Take on Me was initially released without a
video and failed to chart. With the video it
became a huge hit.

The original video for "Take On Me" was recorded in 1984 and it took two versions and three releases to finally chart in the UK, reaching no. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in October 1985. In the US in October 1985 this song became the only A-ha song to be top of the Billboard Hot 100. The song gained its popularity mostly by the music video which was directed by Steve Barron. The video shows the band in a pencil-sketch animation method called rotoscoping, combined with live action scenes. This music video won six awards and was nominated for two at the 1986 MTV video music awards.
